What to Expect From a Well-Woman Exam

If you’re hoping to stay on top of your health and catch any major issues before they grow, a well-woman exam is crucial.

Taking stock of your family and medical history

Your present health is affected by your family and medical history. As part of your well-woman exam, our team asks you questions about your family’s medical history as well as your own personal health record.

We use the answers to these questions to create a risk assessment that helps us determine which exams, screenings, and tests will be most beneficial to your long-term and immediate health.

Evaluating your health with a physical exam

At Genesis Weight Loss and Wellness Centers, Dr. Guerre begins his assessment of your gynecological health with a physical exam. This involves checking your height, weight, and vital signs and tracking them each year to update your information over time.

Dr. Guerre conducts a breast exam to check for early signs of breast cancer as well as a check of your abdomen and thyroid glands. If necessary, Dr. Guerre orders lab tests to evaluate key functions and numbers, such as cholesterol and glucose levels and liver function.

Depending on your age and lifestyle, Dr. Guerre may also conduct a pelvic exam using a speculum to check your cervix and take a Pap smear.

If you’re planning to begin or continue growing your family, Dr. Guerre takes time to discuss what you can do to prepare your body for this important event and answer any questions you may have about pregnancy.

Keeping you current with screenings and tests

Your annual well-woman exam is also a time to get you up to date with important screenings and medical tests. Some of these screenings and tests are age-related, like your first Pap smear at 21 and first human papillomavirus (HPV) screening at 25.

Dr. Guerre may also conduct a confidential STD screening and look for signs of cancer or other illnesses. When these issues are detected early through your well-woman exam, treatment is generally more effective.

Our team can also provide any necessary immunizations and boosters you may need to keep you current and healthy.
